Nature-Based Wellbeing for Veterans: Roy Goddin on Creative Health Stories

Our co-founder, Roy Goddin, recently took part in the Creative Health Stories podcast episode “Nature-Based Wellbeing in South West England.” In this insightful conversation, Roy highlights how The Root Cause Project supports veterans, serving personnel, and their families through nature-based initiatives designed to improve mental health and well-being.

Alongside fellow guests Laura Tween (Director of Able Hands Together) and Marie-Claire Henon (Green Care Lead at Bridie’s Farm), Roy discusses the power of green spaces in fostering resilience, recovery, and camaraderie—values deeply ingrained in military life.

For many veterans, the transition to civilian life can be challenging, often accompanied by mental health struggles such as PTSD, anxiety, and depression. At The Root Cause Project, we recognise that nature-based activities provide a unique and effective means of support, mirroring the structure, teamwork, and sense of purpose found in military service. Whether it’s working on conservation projects, engaging in outdoor therapy, or simply spending time in nature, these experiences help veterans reconnect, rebuild confidence, and find renewed purpose.

This podcast episode sheds light on the importance of these initiatives and the real impact they have on those who have served.
